Résumé : |
This paper aims to explain in simple terms how blockchain technically works, and how could it benefit to the business world over the next years, with a strong focus on the accounting and the audit profession. Starting with a technical overview, we will discuss first to what extent can blockchain bring more efficiency to companies. Then applying what we have learned to the accounting and audit sector, we will introduce the notion of a triple-entry accounting system. That system, enabled by blockchain, could become a whole new way to record and do business, hence its label of ‘paradigm’. It should bring better strategic decisions to companies and reallocate resources from low value-added to high value-added activities, especially when combined with other new technologies. With this in mind, I conducted a qualitative research by interviewing three people to get complementary information. One interview was aimed to gather information about what blockchain could bring to organizations, with a focus on increased trust and security. The other two focused on operational applications and future prospects of blockchain in auditing. Following those interviews, I have found that blockchain should indeed create a new performance paradigm in companies. In the audit and accounting world, processes would gain a lot in efficiency, with a radical change of the audit profession in the long-term. However, this economic paradigm is only at its early stage and could face serious limits to go mainstream. More generally, blockchain has the power of creating a new society more decentralized and controlled than before. Yet, blockchain could encounter genuine environment and political issues that would hinder its expansion. |
