Finding effective ways to develop and improve competitiveness is becoming one of the pressing challenges facing companies. The introduction of innovative technologies helps companies to ensure sustainability by providing consumers with new services and products. This paper explores how companies are adopting M&A as a business growth strategy, tomaintain and strengthen their market position. The study considered the automotive industry as one of the key areas of the global economy. Also, this paper is try to determine the role of M&A in acquiring external knowledge to achieve strategic objectives in the automotive industry. To determine the role of M&A in acquiring technological competencies, the paper analyzed the innovation activity of automotive companies and examined their patent portfolios. The research revealed the main directions of technology strategies of automotive industry leaders. They are characterized by the digitalization of production, environmental conservation, and the introduction of artificial intelligence.The results of the research show that M&A have become part of companies' strategies and contribute to the acquisition of new technological competencies and critical knowledge. Mergers and acquisitions are becoming one of the ways to combine the intellectual, economic,and technological capabilities of companies.
