His essence as a smart, charming and elegant seductor did not change much throughout the many movies and reboots. James Bond is aware and proud of his (hyper)masculinity, at the risk of sounding outdated or even sexist, as critics often pointed out. However, the James Bond franchise having the longest lifespan onscreen – from 1962 to now – proves the characterization of James Bond evolved to remain coherent with the social context of each movie’s release, and so did his embodiment of masculinity. This paper comes as an analysis of how James Bond’s masculinity has been portrayed throughout the franchise and its reboots, and how it embodies different theories on that matter.
