Résumé : |
The phenomenon of concentration in the publishing industry have been going on for decades, by waves, and is the consequence of economic motives – necessity to secure the company's profitability especially in times of increased production costs, massification of the market and consequently need for larger print-runs and widen distribution –, and non-economic factors such as the standardization of practices, the progressive domination of the English language and the homogenisation of published books at an international level. This dissertation covers those issues, and their consequences on the – mainly French – market as well as on small publishers’ strategies. It tries to explain the causes and fallouts of the fringed oligopoly structure that emerged due to the
concentration of publishing houses. In its second part, dedicated to a qualitative study, it focuses on the New-Caledonian market and publishers' strategies in an extreme environment. It provides recommendations regarding the local publishers' practices, their, publications orientation and their possible – and somewhat necessary – expansion in the Pacific region. |
