Many rap songs address issues like police brutality, racism, poverty, and the struggles of inner-city life and rap artists have used their platform to raise awareness and advocate for social justice. However, one thing is undeniable in rap music, whether it is in the lyrics or in the music videos : the degrading image of women. This dissertation will analyze in a first part, the birth and rise of rap as a political music genre defined by hegemonic masculinity, in a second part the many depictions and role of women resulting from it and lastly, the beginning, success and controversy of hip feminism and what is called « the baddest bitch » rap.
