PSYCHOLOGIE ; LIBERTE ; NEUROSCIENCESIndex. décimale : 164.63 PSYCHOLOGIE Résumé : Behind every thought, action and experience there lies a chain of biological and environmental causes, stretching back from the moment a neuron fires to the dawn of our species and beyond. Nowhere in this infinite sequence is there a place where free will could play a role. Without free will, it makes no more sense to punish people for antisocial behaviour than it does to scold a car for breaking down. It is no one's fault they are poor or overweight or unsuccessful, nor do people deserve praise for their talent or hard work; 'grit' is a myth. This mechanistic view of human behaviour challenges our most powerful instincts, but history suggests that we have already made great strides toward it: where once we saw demonic possession or cowardice, for example, now we diagnose illness or trauma and offer help. Determined confronts us with our true nature: who and what we are is biology and nothing more. Disturbing and liberating in equal measure, it explores the far-reaching implications for society of accepting this reality. Monumentally difficult as it may be, the reward will be a far more just and humane world. Permalink : https://cataloguelibrary.neoma-bs.fr/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=603990 Exemplaires(1)

COMMUNICATION ; CRITIQUE ; OPINIONRésumé : Based on a popular course at the University of Washington, this book gives us the tools to see through the obfuscations, deliberate and careless, that dominate every realm of our lives. In this lively, provocative guide, biologist Carl Bergstrom and information scientist Jevin West show that calling out nonsense is crucial to a properly functioning social group, whether it be a circle of friends, a community of researchers, or the citizens of a nation. Through six rules of thumb, they help us to recognize when numbers are being manipulated, to cut through the crap wherever we encounter it - even within ourselves - and learn how to give the real facts to a crystal-loving friend or climate change denier uncle. CULTURE ; SOCIETE DE CONSOMMATIONIndex. décimale : 164.11 SOCIOLOGIE CULTURELLE Résumé : In his groundbreaking investigation, Atlantic senior editor Derek Thompson uncovers the hidden psychology of why we like what we like and reveals the economics of cultural markets that invisibly shape our lives. Shattering the sentimental myths of hit-making that dominate pop culture and business, Thompson shows quality is insufficient for success, nobody has "good taste," and some of the most popular products in history were one bad break away from utter failure. It may be a new world, but there are some enduring truths to what audiences and consumers want. People love a familiar surprise: a product that is bold, yet sneakily recognizable. Every business, every artist, every person looking to promote themselves and their work wants to know what makes some works so successful while others disappear. Hit Makers is a magical mystery tour through the last century of pop culture blockbusters and the most valuable currency of the twenty-first century—people’s attention. BCE ; CRISE ECONOMIQUE ; ZONE MONETAIREIndex. décimale : 335.83 EURO Résumé : In 2010, the 2008 global financial crisis morphed into the 'eurocrisis'. It has not abated. The 19 countries of the Eurozone have been rocked by economic stagnation and debt crises. Some of them have been in depression for years while the governing powers of the Eurozone have careened from emergency to emergency, most notably in Greece. Hailed by its architects as a lever that would bring Europe together and promote prosperity, the common currency has actually done the opposite.
In The Euro, Nobel prize-winning economist and bestselling author Joseph E. Stiglitz dismantles the prevailing consensus around what ails Europe, demolishing the champions of austerity while offering a series of plans that can rescue the continent from further devastation. As Stiglitz persuasively argues, Europe's stagnation and bleak outlook are a direct result of the euro's flawed birth, and since then economic integration has outpaced political integration, making its problems worse. Stiglitz shows how the current structure actively promotes divergence rather than convergence. He lays bare the European Central Bank's misguided inflation-only mandate, and explains how Eurozone policies, especially towards the crisis countries, have further exposed the zone's flawed design.Permalink : https://cataloguelibrary.neoma-bs.fr/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=232501 Exemplaires(2)
