“My goal is to leave this planet with the biggest carbon footprint I can possibly leave.” is a sentence pronounced by Denis Leary, an American actor. The irony of this quote, in addition to its humoristic purpose, is the fact that the fame of Denis Leary mostly comes from his part in the successful cartoon: Ice Age. Carbon emissions are recognized to play a major role in global warming, and one of the known consequences of climate change is indeed the melt of the ice from the poles.t took banks many years before acknowledging their part in global warming. Several questions may arise from this observation: Have the banks already taken action? What potential consequences would result from the Paris Agreement alignment? Is this truly their roles to implement transition? In recent years, many banks have communicated on their intentions to concretely act for climate by committing to implement measures in Paris Agreement alignment by pursuing ambition to become carbon neutral from 2050. But despite strong communication and good intentions: Can Banks Become Carbon Neutral? The first part will demonstrate to what extent carbon neutrality is an achievable commitment and how banks may reach this objective. The second part will take the opposite approach by measuring how carbon neutrality within banks constitutes an unrealistic ambition. Finally, the concept of carbon neutrality will be analysed to determine whether it is still valid or outdated as an answer to global warming. |
