Résumé : |
This research, based on two studies, aimed at examining the motives of alcohol use among French young people. The goal of study 1 was to observe the endorsement of each of the Cox and Klinger's four drinking motives, i.e. social, conformity, enhancement, and coping motives. The goal of Study 2 was to determine whether experimentally manipulating sadness subsequently lead participants to report higher intention to consume alcohol. To manipulate sadness, participants were exposed to either a video that triggered sadness or a control video that did not. This research provides useful insights concerning the drinking motives of young French adults. First, findings from this research demonstrates the validity of Cox and Klinger’s four model in France. Second, and more interesting, it brings an interesting perspective about people who drink to cope: they tend to drink heavily and to endorse enhancement motive. Finally, it highlights that a sad video is not sufficient for triggering coping-sadness motives of alcohol consumption. It opens up a number of areas for further discussions, proposals and research.
