This issue is addressed by analyzing the existing literature on the themes of SSE and rurality in France. In a second time, a focus is done on a specific rural territory: the Vosges department (88), located in the northeast of France in the Grand Est region. Qualitative data has been collected through eight interviews in order to try to understand the dynamics of the SSE in the Vosges, what is its impact and the existing limits to its development. The players interviewed are part of associations, have developed links with the Vosges local authorities, are social enterprise or are linked to the field of integration through economic activity (IAE), such as welfare-to-work programme or adapted companies. The aim of this dissertation therefore was to observe and analyse the relationship between social backgrounds, cultural diversity, and the types of businesses one can find in culturally diverse communities. In order to do so it’s important to look at the environment and the reasoning that business owners and entrepreneurs encountered during the early stages of the creation of their businesses. Lebanon was chosen as a case study for this purpose, due to its social diversity and high entrepreneurial potential. In-depth Interviews were done with 10 Lebanese business owners chosen from different genders and backgrounds. An analysis of the answers collected proved that the type of businesses entrepreneurs choose is highly affected by their overall social background. Similarities and differences were recorded in specific cases. This diversity also translates in the variety of business activities existing in different regions and observed across specific clustered activities found in specific regions and absent in others. Yet, rural areas still account for at least 3.4 billion people and therefore represent significant opportunities of niche markets. Delivering in such places is more challenging than in any urban places as there are some geographical and demographical specificities that result in significant last-mile costs and many obstacles to settle a proper delivery system. In my dissertation I will wonder how to bring decent delivery services to people living in such areas. Therefore, I will try and answer the following question: how to improve delivery in French rural places? This question will hopefully be answered through the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data that I will consider in the light of the current scientific literature on this topic.
