When Willie Biggs, the Verger, retires, his successor Tom Nicholls appears to be just the man for the job, but events in Tom's past return to bring violence and danger to the village. Mr Fitch at the Big House plans to destroy an ancient hedgerow and timid Lady Muriel Templeton leads a protest to stop him. The disappearance of the Rector has an even greater effect on the people of Turnham Malpas and when he returns, his sensible approach to the problems brings solutions. However, only the Rector's wife, Caroline, can resolve the difficulties between the two of them. |
