The need for more nonfinancial indicators in performance evaluation and control has been largely expressed. Companies are progressively implementing new performance measurement systems to compute and follow nonfinancial indicators. However, it is also important to understand the link between these indicators and the financial performance of a company. This research explores the impact of the use of employee satisfaction nonfinancial indicators on the financial performance of an organization. It examines the value relevance of employee satisfaction by using measures such as satisfaction rate, turnover rate, or retention rate. The empirical work consisted first in reviewing the Great place to work ranking which rewards companies using employees’ satisfaction nonfinancial metrics, and which pinpoints companies where employees are happy to work. Then, it consisted in retrieving financial data about great companies to work for, in order to show that it is companies with a high financial performance. Finally, the empirical work was also a survey on employees’ satisfaction and motivation, to demonstrate a link between employees’ satisfaction, motivation and their efficiency.
The investigations and the survey I did provide evidence that there is a link between the use of employee satisfaction indicators and the financial performance of the company. This link can be break down: first employee satisfaction has a positive impact on employee motivation, then employee motivation leads to higher efficiency and thus more efficient employees lead to a better financial performance of the overall company. |
