Résumé : |
“By 2050, agricultural production should increase by 70% to provide in of food to the estimated 9 billion people on earth” according to the Food and Agriculture Organization. Facing this demographic and food sovereignty crisis, the need to explore a reorientation of our current agricultural systems has become urgent. When establishing a picture of the current hegemonic industrialized agriculture, it can be noticed that the agricultural paradigm relies on maximizing food production, regardless of farmers’ livelihoods or sustainable development. However, we may wonder if this system allows significant progress in the long run or not. In order to analyze the performance of agriculture, the different activities conducted by agricultural actors that meet with the objectives of agriculture shall be identified. The inherent objective of agriculture is to feed the global population. Therefore, can industrialized agriculture be considered a sustainable way to ensure food security? Indeed, relying on short-term gains, our current system may be offset by long-term losses: a heavily damaged ecosystem and structural poverty that would threat our future ability to provide current levels of production. Besides, José Graziano da Silva, FAO Director-General declared: “The future of agriculture is not input-intensive but knowledge intensive. We need the integrated approach that agroecology can offer”. Agroecology is a science and a set of practices that combine agronomy and ecology. Hence, the purpose of agroecology is to produce and use plants for food while respecting the environment. This movement uses ecological science to create biological interactions and synergies among the components of the agroecosystem. Not only is it a science and a set of practices but it is also a social movement. For this reason, agroecology is a relevant agricultural concept to analyze to determine if agroecological methods can improve agricultural productivity in the long run or not. In order to establish a clear analysis of the performance of agroecology, the different actors involved in the process shall be identified. Indeed, agroecology is embedded is a socio-economic construction which is inherent to its performance. Problematic: Can agroecology can be considered sustainably efficient in ensuring food security while preserving ecosystems and improving the conditions of smallholder farmers?
