Résumé : |
I am involved in ecological actions and passionate by the energy sector. I got interested into the cryptocurrencies in 2017, just before the Bitcoin had known a crash in January 2018. A lot of people think block chain is the technology of the future, which will lead to smart cities, smart grid, etc in a sustainable world. But the more I am getting older, the more I am becoming pessimistic about the future and the time we still have to change our system toward a sustainable one. In this study, I wanted to understand more the possible impact and opportunities cryptocurrencies could represent for the environment. And the main logical approach was by focusing on the energy consumption because it represents for now the main footprint impact. All my researches where based on academic articles. I did not used any quantitative or qualitative study because it was not legitimate. The main limit of this study and in which I am disappointed is that I did not found satisfying and objective data regarding the actual finance system to compare properly our traditional banking system impact with the cryptocurrency currently estimated one. Also it is hard to estimate the time this technology could someday work at a large scale and if it would erase our actual payment system, or just be a complement. Without these information, it is quite hard to draw a precise conclusion. I cannot know if replacing our current system by the cryptocurrencies would permit to have the same carbon & biodiversity footprint, less or more. But I think there are two things one can be sure of: if the two system are used in the same time, they would raise significantly the financial sphere ecological footprint so have an extremely negative impact. Furthermore, the quest for decentralized trust does not worst a disaster for the environment. |
