As the world economy is moving faster, the December 2019 Coronavirus outbreak gave a reason to drive the financial markets downward (MSCI World ETF rate dropped down by more than 15% between 12/01/2019 and 03/11/2020 mainly since 02/17/2020). The medias and population started freaking and protections against this virus were claimed. As a consequence, protection masks companies suffered from stockout and multiplied their sale prices by three. We can thus wonder whether if pharmaceuticals companies can also take advantage from this situation to receive many speculations on their stocks, patents etc. This situation, as significant as it is, is not the first one produced in our recent History. The main cases of latest viruses declared as pandemic were the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) declared in 2002, the Pandemic Flu (H1N1) declared in 2009, and the Ebola Virus in 2014. We will use these pandemics as a comparative to our current virus. In a nutshell, our purpose in this Seminar Paper is thus to demonstrate a correlation between the official declaration of pandemic situation by the World Health Organization and the speculative fluctuations on the stock indexes of pharmaceutical companies. This paper will propose an empirical study to investigate the correlation between pandemic declarations and pharmaceutical industry stock index. After demonstrating that we will take a look on the data and provide a further analysis about them. We will finally talk about the results of this research and give further information. |
