Introduction
In 2019, French start-ups had one of their best years in terms of fundraising. There were 736 in all, compared with 645 last year. In terms of value, the rise is 39% over one year, from 3.6 billion euros in 2018 to more than 5 billion in 2019, according to the latest EY barometer on venture capital.
A large proportion of them have chosen very strong founding values in terms of ethics, environmental and social responsibility. However, is this appetite for the financial markets for these start-ups a sufficient indicator of performance?
The question is twofold: firstly, the question of ethics and or responsibility calls for many other concepts, often without precise legal frameworks, making it difficult to define exactly what "ethics" really means. This can be different from one country to another, from one society to another, or even from one sector to another. It will be appropriate here to dwell on the definition of these concepts, as they are perceived in France, in an attempt to draw the contours of our analysis.
On the subject of performance, the Larousse definition: "A result obtained in a specific field by someone, a machine or a vehicle" also leads us to ask ourselves the question of the definition of a company's performance, in order to be able to measure it accurately. So, are these two concepts linked? To what extents are the start-up-type companies, which have chosen an ethical and responsible DNA efficient in France?
