Résumé : |
This paper explores initial coin offerings can be issued by companies — whereby they issue crypto tokens and commit to accept only those tokens as payment for future use of a digital platform — to accelerate their development and get out of difficult situations. We show that the traditional ways of financing aren’t accessible for all companies and are complex to benefit from. We find that the companies use ICO as an easy and fast method to procure funds. However, we specify that a very adapted and accurate business plan or restructuring strategy is fundamental in ensuring the success of the ICO. Furthermore, by implementing the cryptocurrency in the company’s platform, the firm adapts to the technology and gets ready for the new practices of the future. We highlight the role of investors and regulation in the ICO success. Overall, our paper suggests that ICO, if perfected, can be a viable way for struggling companies to get back on top of their industry. |
