Résumé : |
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 2018 report, around one-third of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted. This waste stream represents around 1.3 billion tons every year, for an approximate of US$ 680 billion in developed countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries. In Europe and North America, this waste represents between 95-115 kg per capita every year.
This food waste is part of a more general kind of waste called biowaste, that represents a resource that could be turned into something valuable, like energy or fertilizer. According to the Waste Framework Directive of the European Union, biowaste is « biodegradable garden and park waste, food and kitchen waste from households, restaurants, caterers and retail premises and comparable waste from food processing plants ». |
