Through this seminar paper, I explore the various representations of Palestinians within the Israeli cinema and particularly focusing on the most recent series.
The literature review aims at showing chronologically the evolution of the representations of the Palestinians, linked to the trends in the Israeli cinema. I splatted it in 3 different phases: the Palestinians were almost absent or seen as violent in the Zionist cinema especially in the 1960’s. Then, from the 1980’s, the Palestinians were stuck into roles of good “Arabs”. Since the 2000’s, however, new Israeli series, inspired from an auteur cinema, started to emerge and to depict more realistically the Palestinian side.
My study focuses on the comparison of the series Fauda with Our Boys, both huge hits in Israel but with really different representation of the Palestinian characters. I conducted a qualitative analysis based also on a survey targeting the Israelis to identify their perception of the Palestinian question in the series Fauda. |
