During my whole dissertation I tried to give some elements and tools in order to being capable to answer to my problematic: Will the passive investing dwarf totally the active investing in the future?
Before to answer more directly to the question it was important to see why active investing and passive investing are such different. Therefore, during my first part I have made a comparison between active and passive investing. First the setting and the purpose of both management is different even they both seek to realize a great return of investment. It is really two philosophies of investing which bring to opposition. Passive investing refers to a buy and hold strategy in opposition to an actively managed investing. In concrete terms passive investing is referring to investing on public indexes (representing the market) during a long time period whereas active investing wants to beat indexes and have greater returns for the market. This leads to key differences between these both managements: passive investing is cheaper than active investing, passive investing is more transparent than active investing and passive investing is less concerning by tax issues than active investing. Even we can think that the hard work and research put in active investing can be sufficient to beat benchmarks, all these differences might have an impact on past results observed between active and passive management |
