The results of our research are clear as to the future of the Federal Reserve's CBDC project. Widespread public acceptance depends on the following factors: ease of use by end users, gaining merchant support, short payment settlement time, the existence of a comprehensive legal framework, and durable retention of its purported value. Furthermore, we have found that the upcoming CBDC will exhibit the following characteristics: it will not necessarily have features beyond that of a simple transactional and value store token, acceptance will become more widespread over time as market participants place more trust in the new cryptocurrency, the CBDC ought to become the dominant cryptocurrency by total capitalization in first the USD stablecoin space and then in the general cryptocurrency space, and the original CBDC will not be an ERC-20 token, though the market will soon create ERC-20-wrapped versions of the Federal Reserve coin. |
