The subject of representation of ethnic minorities is a hot topic, especially in France, as there is a ban on any data regarding race (INSEE, 2020). As France sees itself as one indivisible nation, it does not allow to make any differences between individuals (French Constitution, 1958). Yet, French institutes of statistics is regularly conducting surveys that highlights discriminations that face ethnic minorities in their day-to-day life (Défenseur des droits, 2020).
Few studies have explored the lack of representation of ethnic minorities, especially in the advertising field. Hence why, the purpose of this seminar paper is to gather data on the subject through already existing articles and also through answers collected from French people themselves, about whether or not they feel the advertising industry is accurately representing ethnic minorities. My hope is to bring more light to the issue of diversity in the advertising industry and its impacts both on brands and on the ethnic minorities at stake. |
