Résumé : |
Organizations are constantly getting more globalized and virtual, and as it has been proven that working in diverse teams leads to better outcomes and innovation, more and more leaders tend to hire employees with different backgrounds. However, this requests a specific managerial skillset to be able to maneuver yourself around the cultural differences of these people working together. Some managerial acts are complicated enough as it is, but when mixed with different cultural norms it can be even more challenging to get your message across without seeming rude or disrespectful. Performance management and performance appraisal is one of those acts which becomes ten times harder when the manager faces differences in feedback culture and communication styles. For some, it is the organization’s responsibility to ensure that the processes put in place ensure the effectiveness of these managerial acts. For others, it is the manager’s responsibility to navigate through the cultural differences and adapt to the team.
The goal of this study is to answer this question and offer operational recommendations to managers facing these challenging situations. As we will see, organizations need to build specific standardized PA processes to ensure PA effectiveness in cross-cultural environments and these processes need to remain the same across all cultural situations. The adaptation needs to come from the manager performing the exercise and the success of the process will be depending on the transparency and openness of the climate. Thus, managers need to be trained to become the cultural translators of the process and develop the needed leadership behavior to ensure its effectiveness. |
