cryptocurrencies have only been around since 2008 and more and more people are asking whether their purpose is only speculative or whether they can improve our living conditions. In this
paper, we will try to find out whether or not cryptocurrencies can replace money as we know it and use it today. The development will be in 3 parts: - A comparative study of El Salvador, which has legalized Bitcoin and China, which has recently banned cryptocurrencies.- An analysis of the economic, geopolitical, security and environmental sectors that shows that cryptocurrencies have the potential to become a universal currency.- An analysis of the economic, geopolitical, social and environmental sectors that show that to date, cryptocurrencies cannot replace money.These studies shown that even if the 3 functions of the money are fulfilled, there was however a difference between theory and practice. Cryptocurrencies are a powerful tool to improve financial inclusion and help countries to fight against inflation, but its volatility, opacity, and energy consumption show that institutions and governments cannot consider cryptocurrencies a real currency. These findings show that cryptocurrencies have the capabilities to supplement the current financial system, but it will take a lot of effort on mining and Know Your Customer regulatory checks to ensure cryptocurrencies’ compliance. Furthermore, this will be very important to talk about blockchain and cryptocurrencies at school in order to help coming generations to take the best decision. |
