Résumé : |
The purpose of this study is to find out how the Russian cryptocurrency market changed after the implementation of financial sanctions and restrictions and what risks arise from such a change. The research is based on quantitative analysis of cryptocurrency-related metrics such as: visits of Russian users to centralized cryptocurrency exchanges; spot fiat / cryptocurrency trading volume; popularity of peer-to-peer (P2P) exchanges among russian users - prior to and post implementation of financial sanctions and restrictions. Due to the relative recency of the described events, this research is focused on the analysis of data from 2021 and 2022. The results of this research have shown that after the implementation of financial sanctions and restrictions there was no significant long-term increase in visits to major centralized cryptocurrency exchanges among Russia users. Moreover, we have not observed an increase in spot RUB / cryptocurrency trading volume. On the other hand we have observed a substantial increase in visits to peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency exchanges and the popularity of peer-to-peer trading and stablecoins. These observations conclude that the Russian cryptocurrency market has become more decentralized, which in turn poses further risks. The research is based on the following question: how has the Russian cryptocurrency market changed after the implementation of financial sanctions and restrictions and what risks arise from such a change? |
