This paper looks at the current situation of the Palace of Versailles, a unique cultural institution in France. I have sought to understand the challenges and difficulties that the Palace has faced in recent years in several different areas. I have chosen three principal areas for reflection: contemporary art in Versailles, international relations, and finally the governance of the estate. Thus, my research question
is the following : how does the Palace of Versailles fit in as a new political and cultural hub in France today?
This study is qualitative and is based on three interviews that I conducted, supplemented by a study conducted on the Europress database. Overall, these studies show that the management of the Château de Versailles is much more complex than it appears, and that renown is often a heavy crown to wear. I have observed that the Palace is struggling to define its identity and its market segment as it is torn between a cultural and a political status, as well as a local and a international scale. Those power struggles weaken the general reputation of the estate and forces the various departments to always innovate and push the limit further in order to stay relevant in the cultural field in France and worldwide. |
