Artificial You : AI and the Future of Your Mind / Susan SCHNEIDER / Princeton University Press (2019)
Titre : Artificial You : AI and the Future of Your Mind Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Susan SCHNEIDER Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2019 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691180144 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : A sober-minded philosophical exploration of what AI can and cannot achieve Humans may not be Earth's most intelligent beings for much longer: the world champions of chess, Go, and Jeopardy! are now all AIs. Given the rapid pace of progress in AI, many predict that it could advance to human-level intelligence within the next several decades. From there, it could quickly outpace human intelligence. What do these developments mean for the future of the mind? In Artificial You, Susan Schneider says that it is inevitable that AI will take intelligence in new directions, but urges that it is up to us to carve out a sensible path forward. As AI technology turns inward, reshaping the brain, as well as outward, potentially creating machine minds, it is crucial to beware. Homo sapiens, as mind designers, will be playing with "tools" they do not understand how to use: the self, the mind, and consciousness. Schneider argues that an insufficient grasp of the nature of these entities could undermine the use of AI and brain enhancement technology, bringing about the demise or suffering of conscious beings. To flourish, we must grasp the philosophical issues lying beneath the algorithms. At the heart of her exploration is a sober-minded discussion of what AI can truly achieve: Can robots really be conscious? Can we merge with AI, as tech leaders like Elon Musk and Ray Kurzweil suggest? Is the mind just a program? Examining these thorny issues, Schneider proposes ways we can test for machine consciousness, questions whether consciousness is an unavoidable byproduct of sophisticated intelligence, and considers the overall dangers of creating machine minds. Titre : Austerity : When It Works and When It Doesn't Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Alberto ALESINA Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2019 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691208633 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : A timely and incisive look at austerity measures that succeed?and those that don't Fiscal austerity is hugely controversial. Opponents argue that it can trigger downward growth spirals and become self-defeating. Supporters argue that budget deficits have to be tackled aggressively at all times and at all costs. In this masterful book, three of today's leading policy experts cut through the political noise to demonstrate that there is not one type of austerity but many. Looking at thousands of fiscal measures adopted by sixteen advanced economies since the late 1970s, Austerity assesses the relative effectiveness of tax increases and spending cuts at reducing debt. It shows that spending cuts have much smaller costs in terms of output losses than tax increases. Spending cuts can sometimes be associated with output gains in the case of expansionary austerity and are much more successful than tax increases at reducing the growth of debt. The authors also show that austerity is not necessarily the kiss of death for political careers as is often believed, and provide new insights into the recent cases of European austerity after the financial crisis. Bringing needed clarity to one of today's most challenging subjects, Austerity charts a sensible approach based on data analysis rather than ideology. Titre : Calculus Simplified Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Oscar FERNANDEZ Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2019 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691175393 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : An accessible, streamlined, and user-friendly approach to calculus Calculus is a beautiful subject that most of us learn from professors, textbooks, or supplementary texts. Each of these resources has strengths but also weaknesses. In Calculus Simplified, Oscar Fernandez combines the strengths and omits the weaknesses, resulting in a "Goldilocks approach" to learning calculus: just the right level of detail, the right depth of insights, and the flexibility to customize your calculus adventure. Fernandez begins by offering an intuitive introduction to the three key ideas in calculus?limits, derivatives, and integrals. The mathematical details of each of these pillars of calculus are then covered in subsequent chapters, which are organized into mini-lessons on topics found in a college-level calculus course. Each mini-lesson focuses first on developing the intuition behind calculus and then on conceptual and computational mastery. Nearly 200 solved examples and more than 300 exercises allow for ample opportunities to practice calculus. And additional resources - including video tutorials and interactive graphs - are available on the book's website. Calculus Simplified also gives you the option of personalizing your calculus journey. For example, you can learn all of calculus with zero knowledge of exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions - these are discussed at the end of each mini-lesson. You can also opt for a more in-depth understanding of topics, chapter appendices provide additional insights and detail. Finally, an additional appendix explores more in-depth real-world applications of calculus. Learning calculus should be an exciting voyage, not a daunting task. Calculus Simplified gives you the freedom to choose your calculus experience, and the right support to help you conquer the subject with confidence. · An accessible, intuitive introduction to first-semester calculus · Nearly 200 solved problems and more than 300 exercises (all with answers) · No prior knowledge of exponential, logarithmic, or trigonometric functions required · Additional online resources - video tutorials and supplementary exercises - provided Nombre d'accès : Illimité En ligne : https://neoma-bs.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.scholarvox.com/book/88875103 Permalink : https://cataloguelibrary.neoma-bs.fr/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=493367 Changes in the Roman Empire : Essays in the Ordinary / Ramsay MACMULLEN / Princeton University Press (2019)
Titre : Changes in the Roman Empire : Essays in the Ordinary Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Ramsay MACMULLEN Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2019 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691655246 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Written by one of the foremost historians of the Roman Empire, this collection of both new and previously published essays forms a colorful picture of daily life in the Mediterranean world between A.D. 50 and 450. Here, for example, the author applies statistical analysis to broad groups of people on matters ranging from justice through medicine to language. In so doing he is able to substantiate general statements about routines in ordinary people's behavior and to detect within these routines the very changes that constitute history. Such analysis also shows how this era benefits from the same historiographical approaches that have so successfully elucidated sociocultural phenomena in other periods.Drawing from statistical analysis and many other historical approaches, these essays on popular mores in the Roman Empire cover such topics as language and art, acculturation, thought and religion, sex and gender, cruelty and slavery, and aspects of class and power relations. The author introduces the collection with several essays on historical method, as it pertains to the richness of documentation and variety to be found in the region and period chosen.Ramsay MacMullen is Dunham Professor of History and Classics at Yale University. The most recent of his many books include Corruption and the Decline of Rome and Christianizing the Roman Empire: A.D. 100-400, both published by Yale.Originally published in 1990.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905. HOFFMAN / Princeton University Press (2019)
Titre : Dark Matter Credit : The Development of Peer-to-Peer Lending and Banking in France Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Philip T. HOFFMAN Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2019 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691182179 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : How a vast network of shadow credit financed European growth long before the advent of banking Prevailing wisdom dictates that, without banks, countries would be mired in poverty. Yet somehow much of Europe managed to grow rich long before the diffusion of banks. Dark Matter Credit draws on centuries of cleverly collected loan data from France to reveal how credit abounded well before banks opened their doors. This incisive book shows how a vast system of shadow credit enabled nearly a third of French families to borrow in 1740, and by 1840 funded as much mortgage debt as the American banking system of the 1950s. Dark Matter Credit traces how this extensive private network outcompeted banks and thrived prior to World War I?not just in France but in Britain, Germany, and the United States?until killed off by government intervention after 1918. Overturning common assumptions about banks and economic growth, the book paints a revealing picture of an until-now hidden market of thousands of peer-to-peer loans made possible by a network of brokers who matched lenders with borrowers and certified the borrowers' creditworthiness. A major work of scholarship, Dark Matter Credit challenges widespread misperceptions about French economic history, such as the notion that banks proliferated slowly, and the idea that financial innovation was hobbled by French law. By documenting how intermediaries in the shadow credit market devised effective financial instruments, this compelling book provides new insights into how countries can develop and thrive today.
