Optimization : A Theory of Necessary Conditions / Lucien W. NEUSTADT / Princeton University Press (2015)
Titre : Optimization : A Theory of Necessary Conditions Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Lucien W. NEUSTADT Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691081410 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This book presents a comprehensive treatment of necessary conditions for general optimization problems. The presentation is carried out in the context of a general theory for extremal problems in a topological vector space setting. Following a brief summary of the required background, generalized Lagrange multiplier rules are derived for optimization problems with equality and generalized "inequality" constraints. The treatment stresses the importance of the choice of the underlying set over which the optimization is to be performed, the delicate balance between differentiability-continuity requirements on the constraint functionals, and the manner in which the underlying set is approximated by a convex set. The generalized multiplier rules are used to derive abstract maximum principles for classes of optimization problems defined in terms of operator equations in a Banach space. It is shown that special cases include the usual maximum principles for general optimal control problems described in terms of diverse systems such as ordinary differential equations, functional differential equations, Volterra integral equations, and difference equations. Careful distinction is made throughout the analysis between "local" and "global" maximum principles.Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This first comprehensive description of the French employers' and trade association movement shows how these pressure groups operate and indicates the extent of their influence.Originally published in 1957.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Titre : Perspectives on Antitrust Policy Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Almarin PHILLIPS Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691651224 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : The problems connected with anti-trust policies in an economy based upon competition are many and varied. This collection of essays written from many points of view attempts to deal with specific issues related to general themes of government and private policy. The contributions consider such topics as anti-trust and national goals, administered prices, concentrations of market power, mergers, competition among commercial banks, problems of small business, transportation industries, exemptions from anti-trust laws, the role of labor unions, and international competition. It is not the purpose of this study to develop a uniform view on competitive policy; rather the participants are acknowledged experts who offer a broad spectrum of opinions and methods of analysis. They include economists, businessmen, labor representatives, and government officials.Originally published in 1965.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. AKERLOF / Princeton University Press (2015)
Titre : Phishing for Phools : The Economics of Manipulation and Deception Type de document : e-book Auteurs : George A. AKERLOF Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691168319 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Why the free-market system encourages so much trickery even as it creates so much goodEver since Adam Smith, the central teaching of economics has been that free markets provide us with material well-being, as if by an invisible hand. In Phishing for Phools, Nobel Prize–winning economists George Akerlof and Robert Shiller deliver a fundamental challenge to this insight, arguing that markets harm as well as help us. As long as there is profit to be made, sellers will systematically exploit our psychological weaknesses and our ignorance through manipulation and deception. Rather than being essentially benign and always creating the greater good, markets are inherently filled with tricks and traps and will "phish" us as "phools."Phishing for Phools therefore strikes a radically new direction in economics, based on the intuitive idea that markets both give and take away. Akerlof and Shiller bring this idea to life through dozens of stories that show how phishing affects everyone, in almost every walk of life. We spend our money up to the limit, and then worry about how to pay the next month's bills. The financial system soars, then crashes. We are attracted, more than we know, by advertising. Our political system is distorted by money. We pay too much for gym memberships, cars, houses, and credit cards. Drug companies ingeniously market pharmaceuticals that do us little good, and sometimes are downright dangerous.Phishing for Phools explores the central role of manipulation and deception in fascinating detail in each of these areas and many more. It thereby explains a paradox: why, at a time when we are better off than ever before in history, all too many of us are leading lives of quiet desperation. At the same time, the book tells stories of individuals who have stood against economic trickery—and how it can be reduced through greater knowledge, reform, and regulation. Titre : Postwar Market for State and Local Government Securities Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Roland I. ROBINSON Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691041599 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Most of the schools built in the United States, as well as many public facilities, must be financed by borrowing in the capital markets. Until recently, when strongly competing capital demands have interfered, the privilege of tax exemption has made state and local government borrowing relatively easy. Dr. Robinson has made an extensive study of the changing market value of tax exemption and of its effect on the yield of various securities. His analysis, which shows that the lessened value of tax exemption may well encourage administrative and financial reform in state and local governments, is of importance to finance authorities, institutional investors, and security analysts.Originally published in 1960.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
