Theory of Cost and Production Functions / Ronald William SHEPHERD / Princeton University Press (2015)
Titre : Theory of Cost and Production Functions Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Ronald William SHEPHERD Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691647524 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : A sequel to his frequently cited Cost and Production Functions (1953), this book offers a unified, comprehensive treatment of these functions which underlie the economic theory of production. The approach is axiomatic for a definition of technology, by mappings of input vectors into subsets of output vectors that represent the unconstrained technical possibilities of production. To provide a completely general means of characterizing a technology, an alternative to the production function, called the Distance Function, is introduced. The duality between cost function and production function is developed by introducing a cost correspondence, showing that these two functions are given in terms of each other by dual minimum problems. The special class of production structures called Homothetic is given more general definition and extended to technologies with multiple outputs. Originally published in 1971. Titre : Trends in Government Financing Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Morris Albert COPELAND Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691652221 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : The author indicates that war expenditures have been the most important single cause of the increase in the federal debt, with government countercyclical expenditures second. Increase in state and local debts is found to be largely due to the technological revolution.Originally published in 1961.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Titre : Why Minsky Matters : An Introduction to the Work of a Maverick Economist Type de document : e-book Auteurs : L. Randall WRAY Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2015 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691159126 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Perhaps no economist was more vindicated by the global financial crisis than Hyman P. Minsky (1919?96). Although a handful of economists raised alarms as early as 2000, Minsky's warnings began a half-century earlier, with writings that set out a compelling theory of financial instability. Yet even today he remains largely outside mainstream economics; few people have a good grasp of his writings, and fewer still understand their full importance. Why Minsky Matters makes the maverick economist's critically valuable insights accessible to general readers for the first time. L. Randall Wray shows that by understanding Minsky we will not only see the next crisis coming but we might be able to act quickly enough to prevent it.
As Wray explains, Minsky's most important idea is that "stability is destabilizing": to the degree that the economy achieves what looks to be robust and stable growth, it is setting up the conditions in which a crash becomes ever more likely. Before the financial crisis, mainstream economists pointed to much evidence that the economy was more stable, but their predictions were completely wrong because they disregarded Minsky's insight. Wray also introduces Minsky's significant work on money and banking, poverty and unemployment, and the evolution of capitalism, as well as his proposals for reforming the financial system and promoting economic stability.
A much-needed introduction to an economist whose ideas are more relevant than ever, Why Minsky Matters is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand why economic crises are becoming more frequent and severe?and what we can do about it.

Titre : Advertising and a Democratic Press Type de document : e-book Auteurs : C. Edwin BAKER Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2014 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691021164 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : In this provocative book, C. Edwin Baker argues that print advertising seriously distorts the flow of news by creating a powerfully corrupting incentive: the more newspapers depend financially on advertising, the more they favor the interests of advertisers over those of readers. Advertising induces newspapers to compete for a maximum audience with blandly "objective" information, resulting in reduced differentiation among papers and the eventual collapse of competition among dailies.Originally published in 1994.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
