Titre : Globalization and Egalitarian Redistribution Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Pranab BARDHAN Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2020 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691125190 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Can the welfare state survive in an economically integrated world? Many have argued that globalization has undermined national policies to raise the living standards and enhance the economic opportunities of the poor. This book, by sixteen of the world's leading authorities in international economics and the welfare state, suggests a surprisingly different set of consequences: Globalization does not preclude social insurance and egalitarian redistribution--but it does change the mix of policies that can accomplish these ends. Globalization and Egalitarian Redistribution demonstrates that the free flow of goods, capital, and labor has increased the inequality or volatility of labor earnings in advanced industrial societies--while constraining governments' ability to tax the winners from globalization to compensate workers for their loss. This flow has meanwhile created opportunities for enhancing the welfare of the less well off in poor and middle-income countries. Comprising eleven essays framed by the editors' introduction and conclusion, this book represents the first systematic look at how globalization affects policies aimed at reducing inequalities. The contributors are Keith Banting, Pranab Bardhan, Carles Boix, Samuel Bowles, Minsik Choi, Richard Johnston, Covadonga Meseguer Yebra, Karl Ove Moene, Layna Mosley, Claus Offe, Ugo Pagano, Adam Przeworski, Kenneth Scheve, Matthew J. Slaughter, Stuart Soroka, and Michael Wallerstein. Titre : Honors Calculus Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Charles R. MACCLUER Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2020 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691125336 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This is the first modern calculus book to be organized axiomatically and to survey the subject's applicability to science and engineering. A challenging exposition of calculus in the European style, it is an excellent text for a first-year university honors course or for a third-year analysis course. The calculus is built carefully from the axioms with all the standard results deduced from these axioms. The concise construction, by design, provides maximal flexibility for the instructor and allows the student to see the overall flow of the development. At the same time, the book reveals the origins of the calculus in celestial mechanics and number theory. The book introduces many topics often left to the appendixes in standard calculus textbooks and develops their connections with physics, engineering, and statistics. The author uses applications of derivatives and integrals to show how calculus is applied in these disciplines. Solutions to all exercises (even those involving proofs) are available to instructors upon request, making this book unique among texts in the field. Focuses on single variable calculus Provides a balance of precision and intuition Offers both routine and demanding exercises Nombre d'accès : Illimité En ligne : http://library.ez.neoma-bs.fr/login?url=https://www.scholarvox.com/book/88904897 Permalink : https://cataloguelibrary.neoma-bs.fr/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=527775

Titre : How China Grows : Investment, Finance, and Reform Type de document : e-book Auteurs : James RIEDEL Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2020 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691248066 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Why investment and financial reform are essential to China's continued economic well-beingAlthough China's economy has grown spectacularly over the last twenty-five years, economists disagree about how the Chinese economy is likely to fare in the short- and long-term future. Is China's growth sustainable, or has China relied too much on investment, which is subject to diminishing returns, and not enough on technological change? The first book on the relation between investment, finance, and growth in China, How China Grows dismisses this concern. James Riedel, Jing Jin, and Jian Gao argue that investment has not only been the engine of growth, but also the main source of technological progress and structural change in China. What threatens future growth instead, the authors argue, are the weaknesses of China's financial system that undermine efficiency in investment allocation. Financial-sector reform and development are necessary, not only for sustaining long-term growth, but also for maintaining macroeconomic stability.Although it includes some technical economic analysis, How China Grows is accessible to noneconomists and will benefit anyone who is interested in development finance in general and in China's economic growth in particular—whether economists, political scientists, bankers, or business people. Titre : How to Be a Bad Emperor : An Ancient Guide to Truly Terrible Leaders Type de document : e-book Auteurs : SUETONIUS Editeur : Princeton University Press Année de publication : 2020 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780691193991 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : What would Caligula do? What the worst Roman emperors can teach us about how not to lead If recent history has taught us anything, it's that sometimes the best guide to leadership is the negative example. But that insight is hardly new. Nearly 2,000 years ago, Suetonius wrote Lives of the Caesars, perhaps the greatest negative leadership book of all time. He was ideally suited to write about terrible political leaders; after all, he was also the author of Famous Prostitutes and Words of Insult, both sadly lost. In How to Be a Bad Emperor, Josiah Osgood provides crisp new translations of Suetonius's briskly paced, darkly comic biographies of the Roman emperors Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Caligula, and Nero. Entertaining and shocking, the stories of these ancient anti-role models show how power inflames leaders' worst tendencies, causing almost incalculable damage. Complete with an introduction and the original Latin on facing pages, How to Be a Bad Emperor is both a gleeful romp through some of the nastiest bits of Roman history and a perceptive account of leadership gone monstrously awry. We meet Caesar, using his aunt's funeral to brag about his descent from gods and kings—and hiding his bald head with a comb-over and a laurel crown; Tiberius, neglecting public affairs in favor of wine, perverse sex, tortures, and executions; the insomniac sadist Caligula, flaunting his skill at cruel put-downs; and the matricide Nero, indulging his mania for public performance. In a world bristling with strongmen eager to cast themselves as the Caesars of our day, How to Be a Bad Emperor is a delightfully enlightening guide to the dangers of power without character.
