The Real Problem Solvers : Social Entrepreneurs in America Ed. 1 / Ruth A. SHAPIRO / STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS (2012)
Titre : The Real Problem Solvers : Social Entrepreneurs in America Ed. 1 Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Ruth A. SHAPIRO Editeur : STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS Année de publication : 2012 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780804774413 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Today, "social entrepreneurship" describes a host of new initiatives, and often refers to approaches that are breaking from traditional philanthropic and charitable organizational behavior. Nowhere is this more true than in the United States?where, from 1995?2005, the number of non-profit organizations registered with the IRS grew by 53%. But, what types of change have these social entrepreneurial efforts brought to the world of civil society and philanthropy? What works in today's environment? And, what barriers are these new efforts breaking down as they endeavor to make the world a better place? The Real Problem Solvers brings together leading entrepreneurs, funders, investors, thinkers, and champions in the field to answer these questions from their own, first-person perspectives. Contributors include marquee figures, such as Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, Ashoka Founder Bill Drayton, Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder of the Acumen Fund, and Sally Osberg, CEO of the Skoll Foundation. The core chapters are anchored by an introduction, a conclusion, and question-and-answers sections that weave together the voices of various contributors. In no other book are so many leaders presented side-by-side. Therefore, this is the ideal accessible and personal introduction for students of and newcomers to social entrepreneurship. Titre : Theory of Society, Volume 1 Ed. 1 Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Niklas LUHMANN Editeur : STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS Année de publication : 2012 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780804739504 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : This first volume of Niklas Luhmann's two-part final work was initially published in German in 1997. The culmination of his thirty-year theoretical project to reconceptualize sociology, it offers a comprehensive description of modern society on a scale not attempted since Talcott Parsons. Beginning with an account of the fluidity of meaning and the accordingly high improbability of successful communication, Luhmann analyzes a range of communicative media, including language, writing, the printing press, and electronic media as well as "success media," such as money, power, truth, and love, all of which structure this fluidity and make communication possible. An investigation into the ways in which social systems produce and reproduce themselves, the book asks what gives rise to functionally differentiated social systems, how they evolve, and how social movements, organizations, and patterns of interaction emerge. The advent of the computer and its networks, which trigger potentially far-reaching processes of restructuring, receive particular attention. A concluding chapter on the semantics of modern society's self-description bids farewell to the outdated theoretical approaches of "old Europe," that is, to ontological, holistic, ethical, and critical interpretations of society, and argues that concepts such as "the nation," "the subject," and "postmodernity" are vastly overrated. In their stead, "society"?long considered a suspicious term by sociologists, one open to all kinds of reification?is defined in purely operational terms. It is the always uncertain answer to the question of what comes next in all areas of communication. Titre : Creating New Knowledge in Management : Appropriating the Field's Lost Foundations Ed. 1 Type de document : e-book Auteurs : Ellen O'CONNOR Editeur : STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS Année de publication : 2011 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 9780804770750 Note générale : copyrighted Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Creating New Knowledge in Management rediscovers lost sources in the work of Mary Parker Follett and Chester Barnard, providing a foundation for management as a unique and coherent discipline. This book begins by explaining that research universities, and the management field in particular, have splintered into smaller and less related parts. It then recovers a lost tradition of integrating management and the humanities, exploring ways of building on this convention to advance the unique art and science of business. By way of Follett and Barnard's work, author Ellen S. O'Connor demonstrates how the shared values, purposes, and customs of management and the humanities can be used to build an enterprise that will help to meet the challenges of business today. Igniting approaches to management that build on humanistic traditions is the ultimate goal of this book. Therefore, the text ends with two experiments - one in the classroom and one with a business executive - that take up this call and offer a perspective on where management must go next.
